The Polar Express Train Ride – Southern California

The Polar Express™ Train Ride is coming to Southern California again this holiday season, ONLY at their Perris, CA location. Departures will begin November 24th, 2021 and continue select dates through December 31st. The magical story comes to life when the train departs for a round-trip journey to the North Pole led by a cast of professional actors. Capistrano Lights returns to Mission San Capistrano this holiday season beginning December 4th- 30th, 2021. Families will enjoy "festive programming and a nightly tree lighting." Holiday Storytelling: Families and children are invited to celebrate with tales of the holidays. Storytelling is held in the Eco-Adventure Center and read by Santa Claus on Friday and Saturday, December 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 5 p.m. and complimentary to attend. Guests are encouraged to bring a new children's book for donation to Miracles for Kids.

Enchanted: Forest of Light returns to Descanso Gardens beginning on November 21st, 2021 and continuing through January 10, 2022. If you're not familiar with it, Enchanted: Forest of Light is an "interactive, nighttime experience." This one-mile walk is a rain or shine event. Stroll through and and marvel at the "variety of large-scale light displays, many of which are interactive, allowing visitors to manipulate the lights and sounds." L.A.'s brightest holiday tradition returns on November 19 for the 2021/2022 season with a wild wonderland of light featuring hand-crafted and new high-tech attractions, including glowing light animals including tigers, lions, macaws, monkeys, meerkats, and flamingos "decorating" the Zoo just for you, musical elements including a sound tracked LED lightshow, and much more!

Irvine Park Railroad Christmas Train

Tis the season for Irvine Park Railroad's annual Christmas Train. Come with family and friends and take this enchanting night ride through historic Irvine Regional Park. The train will depart from the brightly-lit train station and stop at the North Pole. This year, passengers will remain seated on the train at the North Pole. Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet passengers from a safe distance as passengers remain seated. The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa invites families to its annual Festival of Lights. This year the festivities begin on November 26th, 2021 and run through January 6th, 2022. The free, five-week long "holiday extravaganza" features "one of the nation's largest holiday light collections of its kind." The Hotel will be illuminated with 5 million holiday lights! In addition, the Festival of Lights features more than 200 animated figures, the world's largest man-made mistletoe, horse-drawn carriages, and more. Access to the inside of the hotel is reserved for guests of the hotel and restaurants.

Kidspace Children's Museum Winter Frolic

Starting November 19 and running through January 9, 2022, Kidspace Children's Museum will transform into a land of wonder and delight at its first annual Winter Frolic. Seven weeks of family holiday fun specifically designed for little ones. The Winter Frolic offers a flurry of experiences and programs, including: a no-ice Sock Skating Rink. Sock skating is the ideal challenge for beginning skaters who can slide and spin without bothering about blades. For an additional $5 fee, go "ice fishing" in the Kidspace Interpretive Arroyo Stream or build a fantastical winter sculpture using special "ice blocks," or Children can decorate their very own snowflake at the Kidspace Winter Craft Station.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade
In the Heart of Hollywood, on Hollywood Blvd.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade is back in 2021 for its 89th annual event, and will take place on Sunday, November 28th at 6pm. Starting on Hollywood Blvd. at Orange Drive, the parade runs east to Vine Street, then south to Sunset Blvd, and then west, ending at Sunset and Orange Drive. Complete with marching bands, floats, balloons, equestrians, and of course, celebrity hosts!

Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade

Watch a trail of lighted boats cruise through the main channel on Saturday, December 11th from 5:55-8pm. Arrive early to grab a spot on the lawn at Burton Chace Park or a good photo spot at Fisherman's Village, two of the most popular viewing places. Narration on a PA system is available at both locations. The 2021 parade themed "Joy on the Water" is celebrating its 59th year. A brief fireworks show at 5:55 p.m. announces the start of the parade, which lasts until about 8 p.m. Free admission.

Visit Santa's Village

While a trip to the North Pole may be out of the question, you can visit Santa's Village here in southern California. "A Nostalgic Christmas at Santa's Village" is happening. There is lots to see and do in this magical spot including writing letters to Santa, visits with Santa, workshops with Santa's Elves, entertainment, and so much more. Tickets are available online.

This year, make buying candy canes an event! Visit Logan's Candies in Ontario, where they've been making candy "the same way since 1933." Get your candy canes straight from the factory! And you don't have to just settle for traditional peppermint flavor (red and white). This year you could be adventurous and try a root bear flavor (brown, orange, and yellow in color). 62nd Annual LA County Holiday Celebration

A Los Angeles holiday tradition presented in conjunction with The Music Center since 1959, the 62nd Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration is happening on December 24th, 2021. The beloved three-hour showcase of L.A.-based artists will air on PBS SoCal for those who cannot attend in person. The Emmy Award-winning holiday show features choirs, music ensembles and dance companies representing the many cultures of Los Angeles.

GLOW at South Coast Botanic Garden

South Coast Botanic Garden's GLOW (which stands for "Garden Lights & Ocean Waters") will be a bigger and better experience this year, according to the organizers. Running from November 20th, 2021 – January 17th, 2022. With food, beverages, music, and a transformed Garden featuring thousands of lights that promise to take your breath away. This year's exhibit also includes interactive experiences and VIP opportunities. Tickets will go on sale October 4th, 2021 for members and October 18th, 2021 for the general public.

Virtual Holiday Events 2021

Tinsel on the Tracks at Union Station

Union Station is bringing its wildly popular tree lighting ceremony to you this year via Tinsel on the Tracks, a reimagined holiday experience. Join us for a virtual celebration including a spectacular tree lighting under the stars on the station's South Patio. In collaboration with Metro Art Presents, the program will also feature a performance from the acclaimed Grand Arts Chamber Singers. Premiering Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. on Facebook and YouTube.

Ushering in the Southern California PBS holiday programming lineup is the beloved family-favorite A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS, which will air on Sun., Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. on PBS SoCal.

Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir on PBS SoCal

A PBS tradition since 2004, the 17th annual CHRISTMAS WIITH THE TABERNACLE CHOIR 60-minute holiday special features Tony® Award-winning and Emmy® and Grammy® nominee Kelli O'Hara and Emmy® Award-winning television, film, and stage actor Richard Thomas and will premiere on Mon., Dec. 14, 2020 at 9 p.m. on PBSSoCal.

Nochebuena at the Soraya

The lively Nochebuena celebration returns this year as Nochebuena En Casa, an online presentation available to audiences beginning Friday, December 18, 2020 at 5pm. This year's extraordinary line-up – all of whom are returning Artists and part of The Soraya family – includes "The Queen of Ranchera" Aida Cuevas along with Ballet Folklórico de Los Ángeles, Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar, Suzanna Guzmán, Las Cafeteras, plus José "Pepe" Martínez Jr. and Susie García.

Christmas Carol from Manual Cinema at the Soraya

This holiday season, the Emmy Award-winning interdisciplinary performance collective,Manual Cinema, returns to The Soraya with the world premiere of a visually and musically inventive adaptation of Charles Dickens' holiday classic, Christmas Carol. There are six performances only, from December 11 to 13, 2020, that will broadcast directly into audience's homes. In signature Manual Cinema fashion, hundreds of paper puppets, miniatures, silhouettes, and an original live score will come together to tell an imaginative re-invention of this cherished holiday tale. The story is told by Aunt Trudy, an avowed holiday skeptic. On Christmas Eve, during quarantine, she has been recruited to entertain her family with a puppet show on a Zoom call. The puppets soon take on a life of their own, and the family's call transforms into a stunning cinematic adaptation of the classic ghost story.

At Theatricum, we're gathering together on Zoom for a FREE afternoon of festive carol-singing and a very special screening featuring our founder, Will Geer. In a three part conversation he speaks with Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas and actor Will Geer about the historical origins of Christmas, the state of humanity, and the fate of the world moving forward. This rare glimpse into Geer's personal essence is delightful and thought provoking. It reminds us, as an organization, where our roots began and solidifies our mission to elevate, educate and entertain. Please join us for some heart warming caroling and then settle down to watch this exclusive master class in historical, improvisational performance all as a part of Theatricum's Holiday Fundraiser. Dana Point Harbor's 46th Annual Boat Parade of Lights will take place on December 4, 5, 11 and 12. Dana Point boaters will be decorating their vessels to the theme of "Fiesta Holiday." The Boat Parade of Lights is subject to change based on public health restrictions and recommendations.

During this celebratory time, the Park's Fun Town turns into a winter wonderland as buildings are trimmed with twinkling lights and holiday décor. Guests will look picture perfect in front of the LEGO Christmas tree, standing 30-feet tall and constructed out of more than 245,000 forest green DUPLO®bricks. Kids may even run into their favorite LEGO® characters such as Santa, Toy Soldier and Gingerbread Man for a friendly socially distanced meet-and-greet. Guests can also enjoy seasonal treats and live music performances, walk around a newly themed Miniland U.S.A and enjoy building LEGO ornaments among other building activities. Kicking off with an official tree lighting ceremony on November 30th, the hotel will unveil a whimsical forest made up of 52 upside down Christmas trees that will suspend from the lobby's atrium along with other holiday décor throughout the property. Traditions at Terranea Resort

Among the many traditions at Terranea, you can celebrate the start of the season with their annual tree lighting ceremony on December 8th at 5pm. Enjoy music from local entertainers and holiday crafts for all ages. The resort will accept donations of unwrapped gifts for Toys for Tots, and the little ones can decorate holiday cookies, and visit with Mrs. Claus. And on Sunday, December 15 you can enjoy Breakfast with Santa: Santa journeys from the North Pole for a magical breakfast and photos in the ballroom. Tickets required. Long Beach's new destination retail center will host Santa for Selfie Time, and Mrs. Claus will be there for story time, as part of their holiday activities, which includes a tree-lighting ceremony, musical performances, and more, kicking off on November 22nd.

LA Zoo Lights is a yearly holiday light extravaganza. Each night from November 15th through January 5, 2020, between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, families will marvel at the "world's largest illuminated pop-up storybook, a magical disco ball forest, giant glittering snowflakes, and a twinkling tunnel filled with dynamic swirls of color." Holiday Boat Parades

Here in southern California, we can celebrate the holidays at the beach and the mountains (even on the same day). Families can enjoy several holiday boat parades that are scheduled throughout the month of December. Dana Point Harbor will hold their 45th Annual Holiday Boat Parade December 6-14. Newport Beach is planning its Annual Boat Parade featuring festively decorated boats, kayaks, yachts, and canoes. The event happens December 18th through the 22nd. Long Beach's Annual Parade of 1000 Lights is happening on Saturday, December 14th. And Marina del Rey is also hosting their annual Holiday Boat Parade on Saturday, December 14th. A fireworks show will get the festivities started and then the parade will begin at 6:00 pm. This year's theme is "Kids Make Holidays Bright."

Their lights begin on the 2nd Saturday of each December and continue through to the end of the year.
